I’ve been in a bit of an artistic funk lately and not sure what to do. Last year, a friend of mine, Natasha Ramras, took Edible Abstraction by Nicola Bennett via Take Two. She liked it a lot, so I started following Take Two. It’s an Australian company, so it feels exotic. A few weeks ago they started previewing another version of the Edible Abstraction class, and after being assured I didn’t have to care about cooking, I decided to sign up.

So, for Memorial Day weekend, I worked through module 1 (introduction) and module 2 (gesso). The basic idea (as I understand it) is to paint things over with black gesso, let dry, then paint white gesso over that making as many marks as possible. You can also use tinted gesso or just color up gesso with what you have. Or really, do anything you want….

I went to town. Now the dog, cat, floor, window, and desk are gessoed, but I have lots of surfaces to play with. Oh, I’m covered, too.

And I still have half a dozen black gessoed papers to go.

I haven’t had a chance to go very far into module 2. That will be the next post.
