Trust Issues

Looking at my last few posts, I’m starting to feel a theme.

This evening I sat down to paint the background on “Learning the Ropes.”

learningtheropes

When I envisioned this, I envisioned the bright and curious little squirrels making their way on their little ropes against a very flat background. Then I got to worrying; was that the way I saw it because my reference photos were that way?

I got out my Photoshop and experimented.

Red?

Yellow?

A darker blue?

I got out some reference material about mood decisions. Should it be gray for fear?

ltr-gray

I spent most of the day thinking about this (I also worked, but who needs to think there…)

It finally occurred to me that it was my painting and the worst that could happen would be it would suck. So I went with my gut.

“Learning the Ropes” – with background; wet sheen

I like it and I’m excited to take the next step.

I think this whole exercise in insecurity is a theme I need to work on. One of my goals for the year it to allow myself to draw more; I’ve been relying on photos and tracing. Instead of tracing this piece, which would have been easy to do with such good reference photos that I could blow up, I sketched it out. And now I’m chucking all my materials about the “correct” color.

Progress!?!

Fearful + in the studio = a better combination

I went to my critique group on Thursday. I held onto this quote like a lifeline.

“Everyone in life has a purpose, even if it’s to serve as a bad example” — Carroll Bryant

I also thought a lot about this.

10524630_10152342447051647_7812800946280452789_n

Am I making progress? Right now it doesn’t feel like it, but critique group is a good place get a boost.

At critique group…

I brought several paintings, though none of them were really “right” for critique group. It is my firm opinion that taking works in progress to critique group is a bad idea. The purpose of critique group is to help you finalize a work; showing a work in progress is like showing your dinner guests your mise en place and asking if it tastes okay.

mise-en-place-food

Still, I was stuck with the paintings I brought and I needed SOMETHING to help get me going.

I showed them this doodle, mostly to prove I’ve been painting.

“Lady in Pearls” – doodle

Then i showed them…

“Stormy Hawk” before critique

They made the suggestion of incorporating more gray into the hawk, but they liked the tree. The tree…?

Finally, I showed them this piece, which is the closest to being “critique” ready.

going

“Goin'”

They couldn’t tell which way the horse was going. Sigh.

Other people’s problems

There is another part of critique group. Hearing about my fellow painters’ struggles.

Watching everyone else put up their painting and talk about what was going wrong, I kept having the same couple of thoughts.

  1. It’s beautiful, even if it’s not perfect.
  2. If you are unhappy with the way it is, change it. Try. It’s just paint and paper.

That’s a good reminder for me. EVERYONE struggles. Several people commented how hard it was to get back to painting after the holidays. Other people were complaining about falling back on the familiar rather than try something new. Most striking, however, I heard people not wanting to “ruin” a painting they’d worked so hard on, even though they were unhappy with it the way it was.

So, I ruin a few things

It was a tough week, so I came Friday and didn’t paint. And I did everything I could to procrastinate today, but about 5:00 the studio’s calls couldn’t be denied. And while I still spent and hour “organizing” I got some good work done.

First, I put out all my works in progress and had a serious talk with myself about getting some things off my plate

My massively overdue commission is close, but needs some serious detail work before delivery. That NEEDS to be a priority.

stealth

commission detail

Trust me when I saw that’s a picture of progress.

I looked at the remaining paintings and made some decisions about what I was willing to finish. Several went in the “collage” pile (it’s a big pile!) But these three I like enough to continue working on.

Next, as a starting point, I took my critique group’s advice and added some gray to my hawk.

stormyhawk

“Stormy Hawk”

You can decide if you think it’s better. But at least it’s not the same failure!

Then I took a stab at this painting, which I like more and more each time I work on it, but is evolving slowly.

anotherpallette

“Someone else’s palette”

After all this work, I decided to reward myself by working on a recently started painting.

learningtheropes

“Learning the ropes”

It’s entitled “Learning the Ropes” and it has a fun (for me) story. In May I saw these two squirrels cruising down the power lines outside my house, one squirrel obviously smaller than the other. I called to my mom, who was visiting, and we admired the squirrels for a while, taking pictures (we are a family of squirrel lovers.)

So far this has been a fun painting, and even a comforting one. It feels easy, probably because I’m not doing anything new or experimental. It’s challenging, trying to get the furriness correct, but there is no under painting to fight.

When I had to put down my brush to make dinner, I was sorry.

Last task

But my last task was to tackle thinning down the number of palettes I have going. At least count I had seven (possibly eight.) As of today, I’m down to two, both large. This is good because I have freed up four small palettes and one large one. I got as much paint as I could off the large palette and onto another palette, then started another abstract with the remaining paint before sending it to the sink.

January 23 Abstract Start

As my last abstract start has evolved into a horse (not an abstract). we’ll see what this one becomes. You never can tell.

2. You can rent art at the Salem library. Who knew?

3. I got up early this morning to go with the Salem Audubon Society to Ankeny. I saw lots of birds (primarily ducks). I took five pictures. It was wet. Really wet.

4. Be proud of me. I went to the doctor on Thursday. I got a new medication. This breathing thing is THE BOMB!

5. I took Bella to the vet (again) on Saturday to try to get a definitive diagnosis either for cancer or hyperthyroid. She now hates me.

6. Finn is having an old dog day. He has about 1/2 block of happy walk, then it’s all very slow and draggy. I hope he doesn’t have to go back to the vet for more pain medication (I mean more dosage). But on the bright side, on Thursday the eye doctor said his eye had healed, so no more eye vet!

7. I am done with my overhaul of my friend Chad’s website. About 7 years ago (maybe more?) I put together this website and have updated it every year for him.

mtpleasantbefore

I’ve always been very proud of the site, which was done in straight HTML for the first few years.

But as time does march along, I thought it was time to give the site a bit of an update. So…

Raptor Sketching

Last night I drove down to the Brownsville Art Association for their “Sketchbook Club” night because they were having live raptors from the Cascades Raptor Center come in for posing.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. For the first hour they had a talented instructor give tips on drawing birds, raptors in particular.

tutorial

Then we were given photos of various birds and asked to sketch them in increasingly short intervals, culminating in being asked to study a photo, put it down, then draw it.

For the second hour, “Freya” (a peregrine falcon) and “Valentino” (a great horned owl) posed for the group while their handlers answered questions. I don’t have any photos of this because I can’t get them off my phone, but my scans of my sketches will have to do.

This was the best $5 I’ve spent in quite a while!

Fearful and Lazy Don’t Make a Good Combination

My house is 99% put together and lately it has become apparent that free time is starting to come my way again.

Tonight, I sat down and realized the dog was walked, dinner was done, phone calls have been made… and I have some free time.

So I made my way into the studio. After all, Wednesdays were painting night until a few months ago. This might be a good time to start that up again.

I sat down and started on what I’m trying to think of as a warm up project. It’s a rose painting that has been hanging around for about a year.

rose

Then I started on another project that has been hanging around and I recently experimented on.

fourth

My original title was “Going”, but I’m thinking about changing it to “Four”.

I wasn’t feeling it. I have so many projects hanging around, and an embarrassingly overdue commission… I shouldn’t start something new. I also feel too lazy to do the prep work.

And I’m a little scared. Everything is in the detail stage. I have trouble there.

I found myself thinking about something fellow painter Ruth Armitage recently posted on her blog.

The temptations and allure of change are great. There are always new techniques, rabbit trails and experiments  that seem more attractive and simpler than delving deep into one’s emotions, memories and psyche.

The challenge is to remain true to oneself, while still keeping open to fresh ideas. To hold onto the strengths and working habits that feed successful work.

This sentiment of not wanting to delve into stuff is resonating with me. I feel scared I won’t be able to do as well as “Shoes and Shadows” again.

But I need to try.

So, I compromised. I didn’t keep working on my current projects, but I started a full sheet (!!) abstract.

Hopefully this will get me going.

Happy New (Birding) Year

Hello all and Happy New Year!

Party animal that I am, I went to bed early last night and got up early to go on a hike at Minto Brown Park with the Salem Audubon Society. Let me tell you… that’s one hardy bunch! Four hours later we finally made it back to the car. My new Fitbit buzzed halfway through to tell me I had hit my activity goal!

Still it was worth it. 28 species to add to my goal list for 2016 and 364 days to go to find 122 species!

The park was lousy with red tailed hawks, but I love them, so here’s my images.

We also spotted a mature bald eagle and a pair of whatever this is….

I’m leaning toward immature bald eagle, but it could be a dark morph red tail.

Downy woodpeckers were out in force.

I actually got a few good shots of brown creepers (but they are tricky…)

And lots of other birds converged in feeding groups to take advantage of the sunlight heating up bugs.

Minto Brown is surrounded by water, so there were lots of ducks around. I saw wood ducks, American widgeon, mallards, green-winged teal, and  common merganser. A blue heron made an appearance as well, though at a distance.

2016 is off to a good start.

Thoughts

On first seeing this list again I was struck by two things: 1) Gosh, that’s long list, and 2) I really got off track.

I think that’s a pretty fair summary of the year. Long and off track.

But I think there are a few things to talk about.

Painting. While I didn’t do much in the way of original painting, I had a great year for my paintings. From the solo show through Clackamas County Artist Exhibition to my entry in the American Academy of Equine Art, it was a good year for my paintings.

For this next year I will need to focus on actually painting more while not still hitting important deadlines.

Lifestyle improvement project. On this, I basically went backward. But I’m not giving up. Tomorrow is always a new day (or a new year…)

Reading. 100 books seems to be a good number. Easy enough to do, hard enough to challenge me.

Pets. This category may be an entire situation next year, but I’m excited I didn’t break my “no more pets” resolution.

Knitting. I am taking this off my list. It’s not a priority.

Money. Rather unexpectedly, with the sale of my house, things really got paid off. Now the trick will be to keep it that way.

Home. Huh.

Environmental. While I didn’t do as well as I hoped, there is always next year…

Random. I think I’m going to move this off my list too…

Conclusions

Clearly, I get off track and I need to focus. Basically, the same thing my website stats of yesterday showed me!

So how’s the blogging going?

Last year I published a chart that showed this website’s readership progress. I can find the chart, but unfortunately not the Excel data that made it up.

chart

Readership does seem to be growing, though certainly not as much as the first year. I can see that my readership wants more focus (when I stop posting about painting, things drop off.)

chart2

The Google Analytics data shows about the same trends.
