Manatee (watercolor painting on fiber paste)

WSO Convention

As always, the Watercolor Society of Oregon (WSO) convention was great. I went over Friday with a friend, then took two break-out sessions and a juror critique on Saturday. I was supposed to return on Sunday for the WSO business meeting and juror demo, but I decided to sleep in and then take Key to nosework practice instead.

Let’s Paint on Fiber Paste with Pam Haunschild

I have loved Pam‘s work for years, so I was excited to take her breakout. She said we would be painting on “pasted fibers”. What she meant was Golden Fiber Paste. I had seen it before, but had never used it. While I was (as always) unable to follow directions, I loved what I came up with and may have to invest in some paste of my own. It works great on manatees…

Skip the Brush, Grab the Card with Terri Gonzalez

At the fall convention, Terri Gonzalez won a prize with her beautiful mountain painting. She agreed to do a breakout session demonstrating her technique, and the examples before are indicative of my newness to the process, not Terri’s instruction. In point of fact, before I decided to “just try something” I was loving what the directions were giving me!

Juror’s Critique

For the juror’s critique, I submitted this image.

Assembly

Now, I have to admit to having a bit of an attitude with the juror because he didn’t pick one of my paintings for the show (it was a great show, very lovely and I can see how competitive it was). But I have to admit to being a smidge disappointed in the juror’s critique. While his attitude was to play around for laughs, I didn’t really think he had anything constructive to say on any of the pieces. In mine, specifically, he traced the viewer’s visual flow, asked “what kind of bird”, and said “he liked it”. (Note: he said there only two critiques: whether you like it or not.) Okay.

New Car

And, yes, as promised, I purchased a new car yesterday. See… it plugs in!

No real comments yet about the car. So far, it’s been comfortable. I have it reloaded with stuff and it has a nice amount of cargo room. It’s a new model, so I may have to wait to purchase all-weather mat liners. Sigh.

P.S. With apologies to the Barenaked Ladies for the song reference.
