Someone needs to speak to the show entry people, because I’ve spent the last several days sending out art entries. Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS), Watercolor Society of Oregon (WSO), International Society of Experimental Art (ISEA), Western Fed, and even the Emerald Art Center. Folks… can’t we break it up a little?
What did I send, you ask?
NWWS
WSO
ISEA

Western Fed
Emerald Art Center – Cascade Raptor Center, Raptor Art Challenge & Exhibition

I’m now tired and broke.
Once last thing… Pirate Shipping IS really very inexpensive. I decided to send Pantalooned Percher via their service. $7.56. I’ve never, ever shipped any painting for less than $40.
Other News
In other news, part of the reason I am on this big entry spree is because I am about to go on vacation and will miss the actual deadlines of these shows. Where am I going, you ask?
A few weeks ago, they advertised the trip on Facebook. It’s been a while since I’ve been anywhere or done anything except write and paint. It looked like my kind of thing: animals, ocean, and bird watching. So, I checked with the dog sitter and got a ticket! I’m really looking forward to this!
“Art is the only thing that can turn a blank canvas into a masterpiece.”
In October, I decided to teach a class on liquid charcoal at the Artists Studio Association here in Lincoln City. I had taught a version of this class at the Watercolor Society of Oregon, but I thought I had enough material to push it into a full-day class. So, I gave it a shot. No one threw things, and I had a pretty good time.
Based on that overwhelming endorsement, I put together a set of three classes on working in a series. A few technical glitches later, and the first class was last Saturday. Nine students showed up, and again, no one threw anything. I had a good time… even got a few hugs.
You’ll have to take the class if you want to know what I taught (or wait, I’m sure I’ll end up talking about it here), but one thing stands out to me. As female artists we are terrified of doing something wrong. The first class was about emotions and color. I had a couple of exercises, and if I had a dollar for every time I heard “I did it wrong”, my vacation would be paid for.
I think that’s sad. We were working on learning how we, as individual painters, respond to various colors. How could you be doing that wrong? But it’s a worry for many female artists.
Something to think about…
Last thing… Ruffly
I almost signed off without a last plug for Ruff Justice. It will be out January 28, while I am on vacation. Feel free to enjoy!
